Powerboating Course for Kids

Jr. Captain's is a 5 day (15 hours) on-the-water instruction for kids from ages 11-15.
The program covers basic boating and safety skills such as:

  • Safety

  • Boat handling

  • Man Overboard

  • Docking

  • Fueling

  • Navigation

  • Water Sports basics

  • Tubing safety

  • Line handling

  • Knots

  • Weather Awareness

  • Boating Apps

Students will learn and practice these skills through on-water training, classroom instruction and online course materials. By the end of the week, students will gain confidence operating small, single outboard powerboats. Upon successful completion of the course and additional homework assignments, students will receive their Maryland Safe Boating certificate, which meets all mandatory boating education requirements in 49 U.S. States.

Course Details

  • Taught by Licensed Captains and certified MD Safe Boating Instructors

  • 5 consecutive days, Monday - Friday

  • Choose one of two sessions:
    9:00 am - 12:00 am
    1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
    4 students per boat (min of 2 students per boat required)

  • Private boats available year-round.

  • We will train in rainy conditions. If there is lightening with 5-10 miles boats will not leave the docks or will return for classroom instruction. Please ensure you child has a good rain jacket.

 

What to bring

  • Bring your own USCG approved PFD (Lifejacket)

  • Sunscreen (pre-applied), sunglasses, hat, filled water bottle, snack, towel, change of clothes, and weather appropriate clothing.

  • Cell phones allowed but will be in student backpack or instructor waterproof case during training.

  • Sun hats are very nice to have for students during peak summer months.

  • Early season, it’s about 10 degrees cooler on the water. Having a light warm layer is a good plan.

  • Rain jacket, rain jacket, rain jacket. Also, it’s a good idea to always have a rain jacket with you on the water.

  • We recommend students put all materials in a small backpack or bag. We will clip these into the boats or store where they are accessible.
